Background of the Study
Drug abuse is a growing public health problem globally, and Nigeria is no exception. In Yobe State, the prevalence of drug abuse has risen significantly, particularly among adolescents and young adults (Aliyu & Musa, 2024). Commonly abused substances in the region include cannabis, tramadol, and methamphetamines, which are readily accessible and often used to cope with stress, economic hardship, and social pressures. Drug abuse leads to a range of health problems, including addiction, mental health disorders, and physical ailments such as liver damage, respiratory issues, and cardiovascular problems (National Institute on Drug Abuse [NIDA], 2024).
The health implications of drug abuse are severe, not only affecting individuals but also placing a strain on healthcare systems and families. In Yobe State, the lack of mental health services, social support systems, and addiction recovery programs exacerbates the situation, making it difficult to address the root causes of drug abuse and provide adequate treatment (Adebayo et al., 2024). This study will investigate the prevalence of drug abuse in Yobe State and explore the associated health implications, including both physical and mental health consequences.
Statement of the Problem
The increasing prevalence of drug abuse in Yobe State, particularly among the youth, is a serious public health concern. While drug use remains widespread, there is limited research on its full scope and the subsequent health impacts on users. This study will investigate the extent of drug abuse in Yobe State and the resulting health implications, both physical and psychological, in order to inform public health interventions and policy.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the prevalence of drug abuse among residents of Yobe State.
2. To examine the physical and mental health consequences of drug abuse in Yobe State.
3. To recommend strategies for addressing drug abuse and improving health outcomes in Yobe State.
Research Questions
1. What is the prevalence of drug abuse among different demographics in Yobe State?
2. What are the physical and mental health consequences of drug abuse in Yobe State?
3. What interventions can be implemented to reduce drug abuse and its associated health risks in Yobe State?
Research Hypotheses
1. There is a significant relationship between drug abuse and negative health outcomes, including mental health disorders and physical ailments, in Yobe State.
2. The prevalence of drug abuse is higher among young adults in Yobe State compared to older populations.
3. Public health interventions targeting drug abuse will reduce the incidence of drug-related health issues in Yobe State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on the prevalence and health implications of drug abuse in Yobe State. Limitations include challenges in obtaining accurate data due to the stigma surrounding drug abuse, as well as the difficulty in measuring the long-term health impacts in a cross-sectional study design.
